Project 1: Curating Sleep Deprivation

Project 1 is done. Morale is low.

For our first project in WEPO, we were asked to select a key term and create an exhibit that strengthens our understanding of the key word or gives us a deeper meaning. Because I hate myself, I decided to scrap everything I had originally intended for project 1 and I chose a completely different key word and platform the day before it was due. You may ask why I would ever do such a heinous thing? It was all because a song came on Spotify and I really liked it. After countless hours trying to navigate my way through my first ever Prezi as well as trying to decipher these extremely complicated theories on audience (something I used to think was so simple)... the project is turned in!!! #goodriddance

All jokes aside, I actually did learn a lot about a lot in these past 24 hours:

#1: There are so many factors to be considered when writing. It's not just about making sentences, its about making meaning to an audience and in this we find ourselves as composers wondering if the spacing between our paragraphs contributes something to the argument we are trying to make. I’m starting to think that writing is a form of composing and composing is a multitude of things including but not restricted to directing, choreographing, painting, acting, etc. Project 1 is the perfect example of the relationship between writing and composing. As part of my composition I had to write in order to reflect but I also remediated, assembled, customized, edited, designed and curated and exhibit.

#2: In todays day and age, everything is digital. I took this into consideration when planning for my exhibit. Will it be more effective if its tangible? I found that the more research I did the more came up about audiences and digital media and knew that the most fitting platform for my exhibit was on a digital space. Through a platform that allowed me to design a flow of artifacts with ease, I believe I was able to effectively communicate my deeper understanding of the relationship between different texts and their audiences.

#3: None of our key terms can be defined without referring to the others. While I was trying to define audience I found it impossible to avoid speaking about exigence or genre because both are directly correlated with audience and this could probably be said about all the other key words too. All terms work in cohesion making a formula to an efficient rhetorical text.

  1. I'm really surprised at how many of you all have mentioned something coming to you from the world and that interaction affecting your projects! I wonder if there's something here about timing (what rhetoricians might refer to a kairos), materials, and composing environments...
